Each year, on 9 May, we celebrate an important milestone that marked Europe’s history—a day that symbolises our unity, shared values, and enduring commitment to peace, cooperation, and democracy. I am delighted to celebrate this Europe Day with you.
On 9 May 1950, French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman presented a visionary proposal that changed the course of history. The Schuman Declaration paved the way for peace, integration, and prosperity across Europe, laying the foundations of what is now the European Union. This year holds particular significance as we mark the 40th anniversary of the first official Europe Day celebrations, symbolised by the EU flag and anthem. These milestones reflect the strength and continuity of the European project.
Europe was built on a promise: freedom, equality, and democracy. Europe Day is an opportunity to celebrate not only who we are, but also what we do together to protect these values and create opportunities for citizens, while strengthening partnerships around the world.
Yet today’s world presents growing challenges. Peace in Europe can no longer be taken for granted, global tensions are rising, and the rules-based international order is increasingly contested. In response, the European Union continues to uphold international norms and values, to promote peace and stability and to foster opportunities for sustained global prosperity. From supporting Ukraine or being engaged in the Middle East, to strengthening security cooperation around the world, to promoting international law and economic resilience, the EU continues to stand as a pillar of stability and a reliable and predictable partner in an uncertain world.
No country can address global challenges alone. Whether tackling climate change, advancing the digital transition, or protecting human rights, partnership is essential. The European Union is committed to building strong and fair partnerships across the globe. With our partners, including Thailand, the EU is advancing multilateral and bilateral cooperation and initiatives such as Global Gateway and Team Europe approach to deliver shared solutions for a fairer, safer, and more sustainable world.
The EU and Thailand are strategic partners, joining hands together to preserve multilateralism, the international order and fair and rules-based trade, cope with global challenges and promote peace, shared prosperity and universal rights. The EU is a major trade partner and investor in Thailand, while Thai brands are becoming household names in Europe. People-to-people relations are flourishing, with European tourists ranking second as a source of foreign visitors to Thailand, and students and academics making good use of the Erasmus+ program and bringing our societies closer together. Events such as the European Union film festival foster cultural exchanges even further.
Happy Europe day!
